Hi Evelyn, Nothing but warmest thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery for you. I know what you went through because like you, I had colon issues back in '94 and again in '99 (both times resulting in surgery) but mine was due to pollyps. I had a resection done twice within those five years. I lost my oldest brother Alvin to colon cancer back in '98, just 2 days after Christmas.

God speed to you my new friend.

Hi, Bob,

I'm from the class of '59.

I appreciate your prayers. I had colon issues, not cancer. I
was in the hospital twice, the second time for surgery, which
established that I did not have cancer; but rather, Crone's
disease. Some of my colon was removed, but I could not be put
back together then because it was a 50 percent risk of failure.
I'm going to be put back together at the end of April; now it's a
5 percent risk of failure. I have not been able to live in my
own home since the last week of last June. If all goes well and
I have fully regained my strength, I plan to go home sometime
this summer.

So I will appffeciate the prayers of you all.

Cordially,

Evelyn

If it has been a year & you have been sick. It is great to hear
from you. I
don't believe I know you though but I will keep you in my
prayers. That you
continue to improve.

Hi, Gary and all,

Gary, When you and I were at MSB, Jesse Manley taught the piano
students
that Mrs. Williams (later Hunn) could not take because she had
no room for
them. Alicia Zaremba McKibben was one of them when she came to
MSB as a
seventh grader. She and I were roommates that year.

By the way, I have not sent anything to this list for about a
year. It's a
long story and off topic for this subject. I will simply say
that I have
been very seriously ill and am still in recovery.

Regards,

Evelyn

I think as far as I remember, piano tuning is the only thing that
Mr.
Manley taught.

Hi Bob,
Yah, now I remember. He did teach piano tuning because Larry
Yanchus took
that from him and he also taught chair caning. I had no idea
that he also
taught band at one time. Must have been before Jack Chard
started
teaching.

He taught piano tuning. I didn't know he taught anything else.

Hi Steve,
I didn't know that Jessie Manley taught band. I remember him
teaching
chair
caning but that was all I knew he taught at the time.

I started playing piano, I thought it was a mandatory thing, and
I
couldn't
wait to get out after a year. I had Agnes Horton as my teacher.
When I
switched to snare, Jesse Manley taught me the rudimentals--drum
rolls,
paradiddles, etc. I can still hear his voice in my mind "Beat,
Beat,
Bounce-it".

In my first year in band, they had Park Herron and Milton
Jackson as snare
drummers, so I played the bass drum. Kathy Barkley was on
timpany and
glock
and spiel; Nancy Denny was on cymbals. I learned all the
percussion
antics
from Park Herron, and we certainly carried it all forward in the
following
years. Park used to make runs to Fabs during rehearsals, just
like Mark
Tonkins did a couple years later.

Because I was small-framed then, I did not play bass drum when
we marched.
I had to pretend to play the cornet and that was pretty
embarrassing.
Chard
didn't want me to miss marching in various events including the
Holland
Tulip Festival. I don't remember who else from my class was in
the band
that year, other than I think Terry Posont and I think his
brother Larry
was
there then as well. I know there were over thirty and I think
at least
three trombonists.

I think during 1967 I may have played snare drum at one of the
band
performances, unbeknownst to Jack Chard. Park switched with me
and he
played bass drum. God, I laugh at the stuff we used to mostly
get away
with
then.

I remember a couple years later when Chard was holding us over
to get some
extra practice before the festivals. Terry Posont put his
trombone away
and
left. I figured I would do. I quietly put the snare drum in
its case,
put
my coat on and just as I was ready to walk out the backstage
door, old
Jack
caught my by my coat collar. I did get in some trouble at home
for that
stunt.
