St. Katharine Drexel (1858-1955)
If your father is an international banker and you ride in a private
railroad car, you are not likely to be drawn into a life of voluntary
poverty. But if your mother opens your home to the poor three days each
week and your father spends half an hour each evening in prayer, it is not
impossible that you will devote your life to the poor and give away
millions of dollars. Katharine Drexel did that. She was born in
Philadelphia in 1858. She had an excellent education and traveled widely.
As a rich girl, she had a grand debut into society. But when she nursed
her stepmother through a three-year terminal illness, she saw that all the
Drexel money could not buy safety from pain or death, and her life took a
profound turn.

Climb to the top. We're conditioned from a young age to do just that. And
we expect results from our investment. Yet Jesus shows us a different way.
We should not be the one to lord our authority over others and claim the
first place but to serve the needs of others. He teaches us this lesson
over and over during this holy Season of Lent.

I pray that I may not seek glory and authority. I pray that I may follow
the example of Jesus and serve the needs of those around me.

We pray for people suffering from natural disaster, especially those in
Haiti and Chile. We pray for great respect for life from natural
conception to natural death.  We pray for an end of terrorism and
war, for the safety of our troops and their families at home.

May God Bless you and those you love, and keep you safe!
