St. Josephine Bakhita (c. 1868-1947)
For many years, Josephine Bakhita was a slave but her spirit was always free
and eventually that spirit prevailed.
Born in Olgossa in the Darfur region of southern Sudan, Josephine was
kidnapped at the age of seven, sold into slavery and given the name Bakhita,
which means fortunate. She was re-sold several times, finally in 1883 to
Callisto Legnani, Italian consul in Khartoum, Sudan. For more, click the

This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly,
untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking every
yoke; Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the
homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on
your own. ~Isaiah 58:1-9a

During Lent we Pray, Fast and Give Alms. If we're not careful, those
practices can lead to even more pride and a greater focus on ourselves and
how well we're doing. Our focus should be on how well God is doing, working
through us.

I pray that my Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving may help me focus less on
myself and more on others. I pray that I may help do God's work, By
"releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting
free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; Sharing your bread with the hungry,
sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked ..., and not
turning (my) back on (my) own."

Mary Jane requests prayers for family members who need financial and
spiritual assistance. Joyce asks prayers for miracles for her daughter who
is undergoing chemotherapy. Susan requests prayers for a mother who is
attempting to recover from alcoholism.

Carol requests prayers for her father-in-law who is having heart surgery.
Mother request prayers for daughter who was laid off from work, that God
will lead her in the right directions and that she will find the job that He
wills for her.

Colleen asks for prayers as she undergoes knee replacement surgery. Marie
requests prayers of healing after receiving her third diagnosis of cancer,
that her medication will be effective. Lynn asks prayers that her supervisor
will soften her heart regarding her request and that she can reconcile with
my husband.

We pray for unity in our country and that we may build a Culture of Life. We
pray for the safety of our troops, their safe return and their families at
home. We pray for a deep and profound respect for life, and for the courage
and willingness to stand up for life. We pray for one another, for those who
have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most. Have a
good day!

May God Bless you and those you love, and keep you safe!

Father Pat

"Be still and know that I am God." ~Psalm 46:10

Newly written each day by Father Pat Umberger. Morning Prayer may not be
published by others, but is a good resource for preachers and those who attend
Daily Mass, and those who would like to keep up with the Lectionary Readings
and are not always able to attend Daily Mass.
