I'm getting a The selected folder does not contain a valid backup set. message
when I press restore files on the Windows 7 machine. The external hard drive
is E. I think one of the possibilities someone mentioned in the thread was
that the backup location on the XP may be different from what APH recommends.
What is the default? In the mean time, I'll keep trying.

Generally, you type in the letter of your external drive in the path name, when
it asks where you want to place the files.
So, you open money talks on your old computer.
go to the file menu and select backup. It says enter the folder where the
files will be backed up," so, you type in the letter of your external drive.
If you are not sure what that is, you can find it in my computer when the
device is connected.
Tab down to the OK button or press enter. Note there is a browse for folders
button, but you don't want that in this instance.
On the win. 7 machine, select the restore backup and point it to that same
drive to restore from.

Just to take things from the top, if
I copy mt_backup from the XP and paste it on the external drive, is it what I
want to do?
mt_backup is in C:\To Be Backed Up on the XP and
mt_backup has
Address C:\To Be Backed Up\mt_backup Go

items.ini
paynames.ini
Primary Checking.mtf
When the register on the XP was up to date and mt_backup had been copied to the
external drive, I think I had already selected restore from backup and it did
not bring the register on the Windows 7 up to date, but I'll happily try it
again if I'm sure what should be on the external hard drive.
Right now, , it looks like the register on the Win 7 is only up to date some
time in September. There are entries past then, but they haven't been cleared,
some deposits are missing, and other information isn't accurate.

This is not Rob, of course, but if you open money talks on your win 7 machine,
you can go to the file menu and select restore from backup. It will ask where
you are restoring from, so point to your thumb drive or whatever, and it will
know where to place the files.

Margaret,
I suspect you are not supplying the correct path to the Restore function on
your Windows 7 machine. You might try the Browse function, and be sure you are
pointing to the correct drive/folder.
Another possibility is that you backed up to a folder on your removable drive
from the XP machine instead of the root. You can check this by going to the
Backup Files option on your Windows XP copy of Money Talks, and checking the
path which is shown. It is that path you want to use when restoring on the
Windows 7 side.

I got Money Talks 1.4.0.0 installed on the Windows 7 machine, but the entries
in the register aren’t up to date and the entries from the installation my tech
did stop being up to date around the beginning of September. I tried following
Pamela’s instructions “
You can do a back up on the first machine and use the restore back up on the
new machine to bring the registry over., “ but am getting a “The selected
folder does not contain a valid backup set” error message when I do the restore
files. The documentation says “
To backup your financial information, select Backup Files from the File menu.
The program prompts you for the location of the backup. It is normally a good
idea to back your files up to some kind of external media like a floppy drive
or thumb drive. Whatever the case, select the location or provide the path to
where you want the backups stored and press OK. The next time you use the
Backup Files option, Money Talks remembers where you stored the backups last
time and offers that path as your new default. To backup to that location
again, just press OK.
To restore a set of files, select Restore Files from the file menu. The program
asks for the location of the backed up files and restores them to the Money
Talks folder in your documents.”
I spent several hours on this and there’s probably something perfectly simple
that I’m missing. I can spend the time to manually update the entries in the
checkbook register since it would only be two and a half months worth, but I’m
afraid the copy of Money Talks on the Windows 7 computer is so messed up at
this point that uninstalling and starting from scratch may be in order. If you
agree, could you please provide specific steps for what I do after I uninstall
and reinstall? There is 6 years worth of entries on the checkbook register on
the XP and I’d like to be able to bring at least that over to the Win 7.

I tried installing the file a couple more times today and got the same error as
before. I’ll have to spend some time learning about the admin privileges with
Windows 7 and will probably have to talk to my tech. Before I spend all that
time, there’s one thing I wanted to double check on. When the installation
begins, it says it is installing Money Talks 1.1.0.0. Version 1.1.0.0 is on
the Windows 7 machine now. When I click on check for updates it says “No update
is available at this time.” I don’t understand how this is supposed to help me
get updates to 1.4.0.0 which is on the XP?

Thank you. That doesn’t sound like to much of a chore. Before I start, I have
a question. It took me a while to look at Money Talks on the new Win 7 since I
was trying to learn the new OS and finding my way around it and I was updating
MT on the XP for around a month so the register on the Windows 7 isn’t up to
date. Manually bringing it current wouldn’t be overwhelming for the one month
or so, but I was wondering if before I install the .exe file you mentioned if
copying the MT Backups folder to my external drive and pasting it on the MT
Backups on the Win 7 so the files would be over written would allow me to skip
having to manually update the register? Or is there another way? I’ve got
about 6 years worth of entries and don’t want to mess up.

You can run the latest download by hand from:

Install this over what you have and it will update, if the installed version is
older.
Since you are not uninstalling, you shouldn’t need your key code. However, if
asked for a key code, then you can enter the key code you have.

As part of the data transfer he did preparing My 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium
machine my tech copied Money Talks and the files to go along with it from my XP
Home computer. My checkbook register initially initially appeared to be in
reasonably good order once I re-arranged columns etc., but I discovered a big
problem.
version 1.4.0.0 is on the XP
version 1.1.0.0 is on the Windows 7 and check for updates says no update is
available.
I purchased the downloadable version so don’t have the CD. I have my
registration code. Is there some half-way easy way of getting Money Talks on
the Windows 7 the same as that on the XP so I can have the newer version and
the register and all associated files will be up to date?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
