Hi Robert,

The design of the program is to not consider the length of the register as a problem. I have some 500 transactions in one of my accounts since May 5, 2005. They are there for immediate review, restriction, categorizing, restricting by category, subcategory, item, etc.

Regarding restricting the view of your register to only transactions from a given date to today's date, by omitting the end date in the dialog box, that might be a cool idea. I'm sure the folks who develop the list are reading the mail and if it fits within the philosophy of the program, may consider it. As it is now, it just takes a few extra keystrokes to enter today's date in the second edit box. It may be considered that by adding levels of automaticity to the program, pretty soon a user is using the automated features and not using basic windows and typical programatic commands. Almost like writing scripting for the program, rather than using the features of windows and MT itself. I don't know.

Note MT's ability to use windows select command by up or down arrowing while holding down the shift key. You can also use ctrl+a to select all preparatory to deleting the whole register or deleting the group of selections you restricted with a previous restrict command. After selecting a group, you'd use the delete key to delete the items, or the "hide Transaction" command ctrl+h, for example. Be careful when using the delete command to prevent loss of data!

Also examine the Date command under the Find menu -- its hotkey is ctrl+d. Then there is the "first transaction today" command under the Find menu with the hotkey of ctrl+E. These are different from the "By Date" command under the Restrict menu.

Also the "Hide Transaction" command under the Restrict menu can be quite useful, especially in conjuction with the ctrl+shift+home and/or ctrl+shift+end method of selecting transactions. All of these are described in the docs.

Feel free to write with any questions. Perhaps I can help.

Steve

Steve,
Ok, I installed the beta yesterday and have played iwth the new features. Nice.

I sitll think ability to set the view to current month and lock it would be useful. After a few months the register will get rather long.

And a minor change to the Set Start Date and End Date in the Set Date under the Restrict menu to allow leaving the End date blank to assume that the user wants the display to start with the desired Start Date up to current.
