Rob and aph mt folks, Can Gary's notion of creating a new file be implemented specifically to create an annual file for tax purposes? That way, with a press of a key or two, a person could have an annual register with a correct starting balance without having to Manually create the file under file > save as. They wouldn't have to delete the unnecessary transactions in the new file, and enter the correct starting balance in the properties dialog. Just an idea, don't know if it is something that would be considered, or if it is not within the philosophy of the program. It's sort of automating what someone can do themselves, but if they are a beginner, this issue would come up over and over again I think. The procedure could automatically designate the new file as "Annual Register 2007.mtf", "Annual register 2008", or whatever. I think the save as procedure renames the file you are on to the new name. The original register isn't lost, it's just replaced in the work space with the newly created file. Maybe, if something like this can be automated, then in this special case, the original file and the new file would be retained in the work space. Of course, I'm assuming the correct checkbox is checked in the options to allow saving the current work space status. Thanks for clarifying it for me. I played with exporting and importing .qif files and saving registers to different names, and you just import and export or save entire registers with mt with the method I suggested. And thanks Gary, for giving such a simple method. Just save the register you want to work with to a different name under "save as", then delete the transactions you don't want there, for example get rid of all stuff before January 1, 2007 to get a record for 2007. Then use the alt+enter to get to properties, and enter the balance on the transaction that happened just before January 1, 2007. (Probably best to write down that date before you start deleting stuff first.) Now you will have a register of just 2007 transactions with correct balances. I also tried the Restrict By Date option, too. The results were the same. I went to the Edit menu and activated the Select By Date command. I entered a start date of December 1st. and an end date of December 19 and pressed Enter. Next, I went to the File, opened the Export sub-menu, and activated the qif file command. I gave the file a name and pressed Enter. I opened the qif file and discovered it began with my first transaction of this year. I had hoped this would be an answer for Nancy. Unfortunately, it isn't. Then if you made sure you had the correct starting balance in the properties, alt+e, you might get meaningful information out of the register. Maybe the MT folks can come up with a simpler sollution, because I think these kinds of issues have come up before. Steve ----- Original Message ----- From: Suzy To: moneytalks@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Thursday, December 20, 2007 12:24 PM Subject: [moneytalks] Re: 2008 start Nancy, The short answer is that you can't. Any time you restrict the transactions, MoneyTalks provides a running balance of those transactions. What are you wanting to do, when you restrict by date? Also I'm still having trouble using the category summary with all accounts accept the personal account. Maybe all of you who use jaws know this command but I just learned that if I type the letter c on an internet page I can more quickly find the accounts information. It works to. Thanks for all the help. In this way I have the best of both worlds - searching all activity at any time for my account, but being able to create subsets for special purposes.
