Vim was already installed. I didn't try any of the window
managers. I did succeed in compiling VLC, which brought in
quite a number of other libraries.

After I solve a couple other issues, my next target is
i3, my preferred WM.

I'm also interested if dependency info can be harvested from
the Debian package database, and used to generate 
Gobo recipes or recipe stubs. 

Compile errors are likely in any source-based distribution. 
That's one reason why binary packaging is so popular:
getting something to compile is work!
