Me again! I drove to nearby Bletchley on Friday (the home of Bletchley Park, where the German Enigma code was broken and Colossus, the first programmable digital computer was built) to pick up a taper turning attachment taken from a South Bend Heavy 10 lathe, being broken for parts. The cost of this was negligible, but it was difficult to gauge the condition, as it was heavily encrusted with gunge. My theory is that I can adapt it to fit my Hardinge lathe (which in American parlance is an 11" lathe). I have soaked it in paraffin/kerosene and most of the gunge has disappeared, revealing a near-pristine condition (except for a few cosmetic hacksaw scars, made by someone hacksawing in the chuck!). I think that this attachment has rarely been used - unlike the lathe which is a wreck! I am slightly puzzled by the mechanism, which has two slides, the lower one parallel to the bed, and the upper one, with the normal facility for setting to an angle. All previous versions I have encountered do not have the lower slide. Any old South Bend operators remember the purpose of this lower slide? Any ideas will be welcomed!
