As an anti-backlash method, insert the chuck key, to which attach a piece of
strong rope. Run rope over a pulley situated above the lathe, and to the
other end affix the heaviest weight you can find.
The weight hanging down behind the lathe so that it takes up any backlash
and tends to tighten the chuck on its thread.

OK, it wont lock it solid, as you asked, but it is surprising how much one
can machine with that set up without anything moving.
It is also easy to try!

Subject: [modeleng] Locking a lathe spindle

Calling all Myford owners....

Does anyone have any good ideas for positively locking the spindle, while I
carry out a slotting operation? The Super 7 comes with a spindle lock of
course, but this only locks in one position, and in any case there is a
small amount of backlash with the lock engaged. What I am thinking of is
some sort of friction device, which can effectively hold the spindle in any
position.

Anybody been there before?

Regards
Ron
