Alan,

The Police checks you refer to are CRB checks [Criminal Record Bureau], =
I
believe thay cost about 45 quid each and can take an awfuly long time to
come through.

On another note what about taking photographs of some loco or another, =
will
this be outlawed if young people are on the train. Extrapolating =
further
what happens when mr and mrs average are taking their holiday pictures, =
one
assumes that if they inadvertenlty allow some child to stray into the
photograph they will be arrested as being perverts.

On yet another note how will the authorities police such laws.

In the not-so-distant future, it may become law that those giving rides =
to=20
children have some sort of check to ensure they are "suitable" people, =
in=20
much the same way that thsoe working with children or old people now =
have to

have police clearance.

Meanwhile, clubs may have their own rules, to protect themselves and the =

members, perhaps rules imposed upon them by the clubs insurers, or other =

outside bodies.

No matter how much we object, that is the way things are these days, and =
we=20
either have to accept it, or opt out and not give rides to children.

Looking through back numbers of ME, there was heated correspondence=20
regarding the enforced requirements for boilers to be tested and have=20
certificates.

Even further back, there were many debates about the new laws that =
required=20
vehicles to have red lights at the rear.

Nowadays we accept both of those measures, and I dont doubt that in the=20
future, model engineers will accept laws and rules that are imposed =
today,=20
once they have become the norm.

As the song says, "the times they are a'changing".
