I read one reason the supply dried up for the average guy was that they began wanting to sell it by the trainload, and the quality began to drop as they went from Pit #3, to #4, to #5, etc, so the small coal yards had to go to something they could buy in smaller quantites and which to the typical costomer seemed just as good.
