Hi All, Some of you may recall that some time ago I mentioned that a soldering iron of mine had expired, due to a short circuit in the heating element. Since then I have been trying to get a replacement element. This has proved to be impossible, so I am going to try my hand at winding a new element. I think I have found a source of suitable resistance wire, I think a source of mica (for the insulation - as per the original) has also been found. The question is how does one bend the sheet mica to a fairly tight radius? The element is wound on to a mica insulated sleeve approx. 20mm (3/4") diameter. Is there anything that will make mica temporary flexible, like, for instance, steam? It has just occurred to me that perhaps fibre glass might do the job - any reason why not?
