The DeWinton company was formed in Wales in 1840
making various items of machinery, and started
building locomotives around 1860. Their standard was,
as in the model, a vertical boiler, usually 2ft 7.5?
diameter, with two vertical cylinders: water tank at
one end, and coal space at the other.

Wheel diameter varied as did the gauge although most
were around 2ft ?3ft gauge, and were popular in the
slate quarries that abounded in Wales.

Around 60 such locomotives were built before the firm
closed down in 1902.
