The State of Minnesota is making a focused effort to implement best practices 
around regular maintenance of your security question. The next time you change 
your password in Self Service, you will be required to change your security 
question and answer from the system-assigned question to a question and answer 
you create.

 What is a security question?

A security question is a simple question and answer you create to verify and 
protect your account. If you forget your password, you can answer your personal 
security question to reset it.

How do I change my security question and answer?

  1.  Sign in to the Employee Self Service

  2.  Select the State of MN Self Service link to display the main menu page.
  3.  Select My profile to display the General Profile Information page.
  4.  Select Change or set up forgotten password hint.
  5.  In the Question field, delete the existing question and type a different 
question, up to 50 characters.
  6.  In the Response field, delete the existing answer and enter the correct 
answer to the question, up to 30 characters. The answer is not case-sensitive.
  7.  Select OK. Unless you receive an error message, your change has been 
saved.

If you use the forgot password function

You will proceed to change your password and will need to write down the 
temporary password that is provided because the cut and paste option will not 
function.

Tips for successful security questions:

  1.  Remember that this answer can be used to reset your password and should 
be created, treated, and protected as such.
  2.  Do not use private/sensitive data within your security question or answer.
  3.  Do not use a question others can easily guess.
  4.  Your answer doesn't have to be the true answer.
  5.  Just like your password, periodically change your security question to 
both keep your answer fresh and to make it harder for others to guess the 
answer.
  6.  Never share your password or answers to your security questions with 
anyone. This includes coworkers, family, and friends.
