I’m doing an Alaska road trip and rented an SUV in Anchorage. It’s a Hyundai
Palisades. Meh.
It’s got lane assist and what I’ll call driving assist. The lane assist beeps
at you when you drift into one of the lines and the driving assist tries to
keep you between the lines. It’s almost like auto pilot.
But both are damn annoying. I’m sure they work fine on a highway, but get off
one? Not so much. The lane assist has no common sense so it doesn’t know when
you’ve intentionally moved out of your lane so it’s constantly beeping at you.
The driving assist is flat dangerous. It does a decent job staying between
lines, although it’s constantly hunting back and forth for the middle, it’s
late in and out of corners, nasty when you have no shoulder or oncoming
traffic, and it’s just good enough to lull you into complacency.
And that’s fucking scary. I’ve been driving it for three days now and I’m
already subconsciously letting it take over.
Those people who are supposed to be babysitting the cars from Waymo and Uber
and the like? They are so screwed. There’s no way to stay engaged unless you
are always engaged.
Don’t want it, trying to figure out how to turn it off.
