Hello Bob and all,
Here around Pascagoula, MS, it does not seem to me that we have near as many
Eurasian Collard Doves as we used to have either. 3-6 years ago, we used to
commonly have them feeding in and around our yard, now we may see a couple
maybe a few times a year. I only know a couple of locations around Pascagoula
where I can fairly reliably go see them, both right along the Sound.
I have wondered if ours were maybe displaced by the White Winged Doves which we
have lots of, and we have lots of Pigeons in the town and neighborhood areas
too. Not many Mourning Doves at our feeders any more either, nearly all White
Wings and Pigeons.
Our Cooper’s Hawks seem to target the White Wings very often. We have two
piles of their feathers in the yard now.
Good question and it will be interesting to hear other thoughts and
observations on these guys.

Subject: [ALbirds] Where have all the Eurasian Collared-Doves gone?
Hi all,
A review of eBird checklists for today from 12 observers for the three county
area in NW FL showed NO entries for the ECD. Yesterday’s checklists for the
area had only 3 birds, all in coastal Okaloosa County. The species was first
reported in our area in 1987 and by 2000 they were common and breeding. In our
neighborhood in Gulf Breeze they were common by 2000, breeding and hogging
feeders. We have not had one so far this year. In one neighborhood in Gulf
Breeze in a more open area, they were abundant, usually dozens on power lines.
Today I visited the area and found none. At one time Lucy and I counted 300
along a 2 mi drive down Shoreline Dr. We do not see that anymore. What’s going
on? Is this true throughout the region? I suppose CBC data would confirm this
or indicate this is just the case in extreme NW FL. One thing is certain,
Cooper’s Hawks, masters of ambush, found ECDs to their liking. Lucy and I
frequently found piles of feathers around our feeders and they were almost
always ECD feathers rather than Mourning Doves, which used to be the case. Any
thoughts on this?
