This looks like a python error, because that string definitively is not 
present in sff_extract.

- what's the command line you used?
- what's the *complete* error message python dumps out?
- which python version are you using? If < 2.6 please upgrade to 2.6. If
  >=3.0, please try 2.6.

If all fails: if you make the sff available to me and I can reproduce the 
error, it's most likely a broken sff. In which case I'd contact Jose who wrote 
the infrastructure around parsing sff to see whether he can find something.
