I do not understand RF design well, so this question may sound odd. For a
beginner like me who does not have any kind of oscilloscope, would you suggest
starting by building a Minima with 12 MHz IF and filters as you describe below,
or build a uBitx? I THINK I could build a working uBitx from your instructions
but am less confident of building a uBitx.

There is another better, but of course, more elaborate scheme that you can try
it. It is as follows:
1. Move the IF to 12 MHz. Use band pass filters above 7 MHz for every band.
This will give you a contest grade rig. Add linrad in the backend."
