I was trying to keep the design 'generic'. The trouble with software is that 
even an extra space in the code can completely throw a noob off.
That's why I elected to have only universally available components rather than 
some simpler and cheaper options. 
 For instance, a large quantity of nokkia 3310 display are available at a very 
low price. They are I2C compatibel too, methinks.
The coding masters can fork the sketch and add/modify it to work with other 
displays, rotary encoders, etc.

On ebay you can buy i2c adapters for LCD for 3-4 dollars. Could save some
pins, but maybe introduce unwanted noise. I don´t know.
