Hugh, you could skip the serial port. I have tried to make the arduino part 
completely self contained. But feel free to modify it.

Thanks for you comments on my earlier post.

I wonder if the USB to serial adaptor, listed below, may provide a simple and 
cheap alternative to an external serial adaptor.  It could perhaps be mounted 
in such a way as to provide a USB socket at the front panel.  It is very cheap 
at $1.57 including postage.  As it is intended for use with the ATMEGA328 
arduino it would presumably eliminate the need for Q21, Q22 and associated 
components.
