*Title:* “Where Freedom Ends and Slavery Begins: The Trials of Prudence
Crandall, The Colored Woman Matilda, and Mrs. Margaret Douglass”
*Description: *This presentation considers the travails Prudence Crandall,
the colored woman Matilda and Margaret Douglass faced when their actions
resulted in them being caught between the demands of freedom and the
constraints of slavery. The action of each of these women brought her
before a court of law, Prudence Crandall and Margaret Douglass for teaching
free black students to read and write and the colored woman Matilda in a
quest for her own freedom.

Dr. John E. Douglass is an Associate professor of History at the University
of Cincinnati Blue Ash College. His specialty is early American history
with a field in early American Legal History.
