Value of History Statement Changes
We've made updates to the look and language of the Value of History
statement; you can download it here

We've made adjustments to some of the specific phrasing and developed a new
graphic layout to make the document more streamlined, more inclusive, and
more helpful to history organizations around the country.
One of the biggest changes is the addition of a new purpose statement:
"HISTORY RELEVANCE promotes a shared language and other tools and strategies
to mobilize history organizations in the United States around the relevance
and value of history. We support history organizations that encourage the
public to use historical thinking skills to actively engage with and address
contemporary issues and to value history for its relevance to modern life."

The Kentucky Museum & Heritage Alliance, in conjunction with Shaker Village
at Pleasant Hill and the National Council on Public History, recently hosted
a workshop focused on the relevance of history. Stuart Sanders, History
Advocate for Kentucky Historical Society, interviewed some of the

In Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State University's Center for Historic
Preservation has placed the value of history at the heart of their mission to
protect and preserve the state's vital historical assets. You can read about

For the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
museum professional and consultant Andrea Jones used Twitter to live-tweet
the 1968 riots that ensued in the wake of the assassination, a way of
highlighting the persistence of racial injustice in the United States. In her
words, "When museums use the past to help people live in the present day,
that’s what makes them truly essential." Read more here

Beginning this summer, the American Association for State and Local History

begin a new webinar series dedicated to history relevance. Through case
studies and interviews, these short webinars will highlight organizations
making history relevant in interesting ways and will offer ideas and
inspiration for how you can apply those principles at your institution. More

AASLH's task force dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the United States
will soon be presenting goals for the commemoration to the US
Semiquincentennial Congressional Commission. One of those goals is "Make
history relevant to every American, every day." We hope that by positioning
relevance as a national goal for the 250th commemoration, more and more
history organizations around the country will begin to integrate it into
their work.
