All-
I think that while a political discussion is off the table, I DO think that
when actions occur in our professional arena we need to know about them and
we need to be able to discuss how they may or may not impact our work-that's
the point of this forum-to ask questions, to get advice and to learn from
each other.
In this case, the original post said nothing about MHS adopting this, or
even encouraging individual orgs to adopt it. It was posted as an FYI.which
is a totally legitimate post.
In my case, for example, we are in the process of moving our archives from
internal storage to an external actor-Notre Dame. So this does raise some
questions which I may have to deal with if this petition/underlying cause IS
indeed a concern for professional archivist-like the ones at UND. So for
that reason alone I need to be aware-and not have people feel stifled into
thinking they can't post.
Also, I have members in my organization who work at universities or are
somehow attached to universities and museums across the US. I can guarantee
that if this petition is making its rounds at least one of them will hear
about it and then they will post on our Grail listserv asking me about it
and I realllly don't want to be in the position of saying "well, no, I have
no clue what this is about.yes, we belong to an organization that is our go
to for issues in this field.well, no, this wasn't discussed so I have no
clue" .you can see how that puts me in a sticky wicket.
Sooooo.having said all that, can I get other thoughts from folks with
archives on what they are thinking not just about the petition but the
underlying cause for why this group thinks it is needed? Trying to get a
handle on both intended and unintended consequences.
thanks

Subject:Statement from archivists concerned about respect for historical
records and civil rights
Friends - A group of archivists has drawn up a statement outlining their
concerns about the mindset and proposed policies of President Donald Trump
and his administration. The statement
(https://concernedarchivists.wordpress.com/) notes a number of perceived
conflicts with archival values, ethics, and the public good.
I invite you to read the statement, consider the issues involved, keep them
in mind as history unfolds, and act according to your conscience.
