About the Organization:
India ranks among the 17 mega-diverse nations of the world. There are over
600 nature reserves in the country, which cover about five percent of the
land. However, human population growth and increasing consumption and
aspirations pose serious conservation challenges. Wildlife Conservation
Society – India addresses these challenges by employing research that
informs conservation decisions, and works with local groups to enable
interventions to reduce conflicts. We partner with India’s Central and
State governments, local and international NGOs in the task of securing
wildlife and wild places.
About the Project:
Wildlife Conservation Society-India has initiated a project called
Combating Wildlife Trafficking, which seeks to build capacity amongst law
enforcement agencies and the judiciary to combat wildlife trafficking in
India. The project aims to improve India’s detection and enforcement
agencies’ capacity to investigate, arrest, prosecute, convict and sentence
criminal organizations that perpetrate wildlife trafficking. To this end,
WCS-India will conduct capacity building workshops for various stakeholders
involved in investigation, enforcement and prosecution including the Forest
Department, Police, Customs officials, Directorate of Enforcement, public
prosecutors, judiciary etc.
Best Wishes,
Wildlife Conservation Society - India
