Thanks so much to Marilyn, Judy, and Annalee for your quick and thorough
responses! My work copy of ADMAU (_A Dictionary of Modern American Usage_)
finally came in the mail and it reiterates all of your arguments. So does
the _New Fowler's Modern American Usage_, which someone had borrowed right
when I needed it.
