Driving your Corvair – an essential activity
Okay, that might be a stretch statement to make during this time of stay at
home and social distancing, but it is not too far off the mark. On those
days you can legally drive your Corvair (depending on your vehicle license
and registration category), I recommend taking your air-cooled wonder to the
grocery store, pharmacy, gas station, take out dining, home improvement
store, outdoor exercise area, work and other allowable destinations or
activities that involve driving a vehicle.
I admit that I have enjoyed these last few weekends when I drove the Corvairs
to partake in essential services that support our local economy. A Saturday
afternoon visit to Princes Hot Chicken for takeout lunch was worthwhile.
Employees wore face masks and gloves, there were face shield barriers at the
pickup counter, a gallon jug of hand sanitizer and 6-10 feet of space between
customers—all of those items and practices that define our new anti-viral
reality were in play. That same Saturday I drove by the nearby Lowe's Home
Improvement store but one look at the overflowing parking lot indicated it
was not a smart move to pick up supplies. That trip can wait until an early
morning when there are only 10 people in the store. Unnecessary (potential)
exposure to the coronavirus is not worth it.
Old Hickory Blvd. happens to pass near our home and the section I frequent is
always a fun drive in a Corvair. As O.B. pointed out to me, Old Hickory
Blvd. is on the way to everywhere: it crosses every freeway in Nashville at
least twice. I really played the part by wearing my Kim-made face mask while
driving in my Corvair with the windows down, but it wasn’t about COVID-19
(doesn’t that sound more like an oil treatment product you pick up at
O’Reilly’s than a virus?), it was about protecting against the high pollen
count. My allergies don’t like this time of year.
Besides the essential errands such going to the grocery store (and following
all protocols to protect myself and my fellow shoppers), my ventures out are
an important way to keep my sanity intact. I’m one of those who can work
from home, but I still need movement. Last week I actually made it three
full days without going anywhere, so when the weekend came the Corvairs were
calling. As the popular Supertramp song from 1979 is titled, Take the Long
Way Home…in your Corvair, of course!
I hope everyone is staying well and, for the most part, practicing staying in
place and social distancing. The MCCC monthly meeting on Monday, April 20th
will be virtual. Look for a separate email with Zoom instructions.
Happy motoring!
Matt
