Dear Jon, Kirby and all,

Thank you for your letters. Thank you, Kirby, for responding to my video by
creating your own video on "What Is Andragogy?", your references to
underground comics, and your encouragement of my creative impulses or, as
you say, antics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MO24W5-ZVw
I find meaningful your distinction between andragogy (teaching adults -
learning from equals or from one self) and pedagogy (teaching children -
learning from superiors).  Also, great to see your letter to us on memory
palaces appear as an essay at your blog!
https://kirbyurner.medium.com/memory-palace-talk-58e8aa8f1916

I am attracted and inspired by the questions that we propose. Below are
some from recent letters.  Which ones could we work together on? And how
could we investigate them?

At this point, I encourage Jon and others to answer for us, if you can:
* What is your deepest value in life, which includes all of your other
values? My own is "living by truth", Kirby's is "clarity", John's is "the
experience of life", Thomas's is "awareness that I am loved by God, where
this love is the gift and key to all of reality", Bill's is "to be as alive
as I can be".
* What is a question that you don't know the answer to, but wish to answer?

-----------------------
Education
-----------------------

Kirby, February 24: How do we empower teachers who want to pioneer their
own curricula, more suited to what they identify as true needs, and more
advantaged by the latest thinking?

We could investigate that together and perhaps develop an action and even
an "atomic learning exercise". I start with my current position. In the
long run, I think a key reform would be to reward experienced teachers by
approving them to teach their own forty-minute classes, and ultimately,
their own courses, as inspired, according to their own curriculum. This
would require flexibility in the required curriculum, and ultimately,
severely reducing it.

In the short run, what Math 4 Wisdom can help with, at least for some
teaches, is to provide a scientific community where they can grow as self
learners, investigate their questions and develop a shared language, as
much as their subjects relate to wisdom.

Personally, in the next two weeks I will be applying to the Let-Me-Think
Scholarship Workshop and so will be responding to this question:
* How do I currently envision the future of scholarly institutions?
And if I am accepted, but even if I am not, I will be investigating the
question:
* How could alternative academies (such as Math 4 Wisdom) broaden access to
scholarly practice?
We are already working on this with our interactions regarding "atomic
learning exercises" and "networks of learning paths".

Surely, the Emergently framework could be part of this dynamic, I think if
we were to try it out.

Peacemaking
-----------------------

A question that Kirby told me on September 11, 2022, was Can humanity stop
living in crisis mode?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMXYxeVhliI

On February 24 he wrote:  Putting the brakes on armed conflicts everywhere
(they go together, as an obsolete strategy) would be a goal for me.  My
propaganda (if I'm allowed to call it that -- that which propagates)
encourages us to imagine a world beyond outward wars.

And that can become a question: How do we imagine a world beyond wars?

Specifically, I have been exploring, How can we, as individuals, take
action to bring peace to Russia and Ukraine?

I keep trying things out and occasionally experience learning moments.
About a month ago, I wrote to Zhang Jianxin, an independent thinker who had
given me his book when I was at the World Congress of Philosophy in Beijing
in 2018. He focuses on political philosophy. After exchanging a few
letters, he wrote me his thoughts as they applied to Ukraine, and agreed
that I publish them online.
https://www.math4wisdom.com/wiki/Deliberate/20230225ZhangJianxin
Several things struck me. He focused on global reform, and in particular,
reform of the United Nations, which had failed to prevent or stop this war.
Even more striking was that from his point of view all of the countries in
the world are slave states, to a greater or lesser degree, given the
relation of power between the state and its subjects.  But he envisioned
alternative possibilities.  What I realized was that it was much safer,
more useful, more honest and more truthful for him to criticize the entire
world rather than to solely criticize particular countries such as China or
Russia.  And I appreciated that if we could collect and publish a variety
of such perspectives, then that would make it easier for Russians and
Ukrainians to speak out in response. And that could help us understand who
might participate in dialogue.

Meanwhile, at the #politics thread of the TOE Discord server, I posted a
link to my letter to the Russian government which I published here. (I have
yet to hear back from them.) At the server, I got an encouraging reply from
Namejs, a young Latvian abroad. He shared with me Alexei Navalny's 15 point
plan and also said that he wished there was an online forum like
http://www.kialo.com where people could articulate their views on the
origin of the war and - I add - how to end it.  I created a wiki page with
links to more than 20 perspectives.
https://www.math4wisdom.com/wiki/Deliberate/Peace
Namejs and I will talk on Monday and think of a questionnaire that we could
distribute to make it simpler for people to express their views.  (What
questions would we suggest?) Thus we can evolve this action. Kirby joined
us at the TOE Discord server https://discord.com/invite/kBcnfNVwqs  and I
welcome us there at the #politics subthread "Bring peace to Russia and
Ukraine".

Last week in Vilnius, I met two rare individuals who showed interest in my
approach of "looking at everything from our enemy's point of view".  One
was a Ukrainian-Lithuanian student at the Vilnius Book Fair and another was
a Russian dissident at a demonstration in Cathedral Square.  But afterwards
neither responded to my letters and calls.  So I am concluding that I need
to spend less energy explaining my logic, which is the subject of my video,
"Bring peace to Russia and Ukraine"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5HCLpr7UE0  Although that did appeal to
Namejs.  But in terms of reaching out more broadly to others, I think it is
important to keep the action simple, and not push or scare people away.
That is difficult learning for me.

These are examples of how I am learning as I experiment in small ways.
This is a proactive learning cycle.  One could say, looking from the side,
that I am responding to environmental stimuli, such as Russia's invasion of
Ukraine, or my parents' raising me to be a Lithuanian patriot and Catholic,
or to my inability to find people to work with me on this.  But I think
such an analysis would be unempathetic and unfair.  Truth be told, a
guiding direction for me is that I want to show that my wisdom is
applicable, which is why I emphasize the logic.  If there was not this
crisis, yet still I would find some other real life issue to work on. But
given who I am, and how this crisis disturbs me, I do not expect to be
unresponsive, in any event.  I suppose what it means is that from a
holistic point of view the way to carve this up is the way that I
experience this, as given by the limits of imagination that I myself run up
against, which say that, for example, I try something out, then I reflect
on that, then I take a stand, then I try something out, and so on.

I think that a major reason why Kirby, Jon and I are able to make real
progress in our letters is that we are able to relate to real life
activity, such as the videos we are creating, so that we are not just
talking together but also working together.  So I think this is a key
dimension of "atomic learning exercises" that we might design and conduct
together.  It is one thing to learn on one's own, accidentally, and another
to do so willfully and even systematically, and yet another to do that
together with others, for shared learning and shared understanding, which
is what I aspire with "learning exercises".

Truth and Wisdom
-----------------------

Kirby, February 23: Where does language leave off and not-language begin?

Jerry, February 23, responded to this question, which makes it all the more
important.

A question that I have is How can I make real to others the language of
wisdom, the language of cognitive frameworks, that I have been documenting?

One large experiment for me is Math 4 Wisdom, by which I am showing how
these frameworks arise in advanced mathematics.  For example, this month I
will be studying and making videos about the Yoneda Lemma in Category
Theory and explaining how it functions as a knowledge switch regarding four
levels of knowledge: Whether, What, How, Why.  (When How switches to What,
then Why switches to Whether)) If I am successful, then I will be able to
show this to experts in the field and hopefully some of them will be
interested.  And hopefully viewers looking for videos on the Yoneda Lemma
will be interested in mine because it is a difficult idea which lacks
intuitive explanation.  Other breakthroughs will be showing that the
fivefold classification of the orthogonal Sheffer polynomials expresses the
fivesome for decision making (Every effect has had its cause; but not every
cause has had its effects; so there is a critical point for deciding).  And
showing that exact sequences model divisions of everything, and Bott
periodicity models the eight-cycle of divisions.

Meanwhile, it means a lot to try to convey to you these frameworks so they
would become real for you.  Thomas understands me best, because I get to
talk at length to him about them, but I would say understands me
passively.

I ask, What could we do so that you could appreciate what I mean by these
frameworks and in what sense they are real?

One way is to note where they occur in our interactions.  For example, Jon
writes: "My conclusion is that any truth should include a context. For
example, 1 + 1 = 10  is true in a computer which counts in binary, so we
cannot say 1 + 1 = 2 is a fundamental truth which always applies
everywhere."

That is an example of "a way of figuring things out in mathematics" which I
have been collecting.  I have a similar example: If I ask you, what is 10 +
4? and you say 14? then I may say you are wrong because I was think about
an 12-hour clock, so the answer I wanted is 10 + 4 = 2.  Just like Jon, I
call this "context".  I locate it as the ultimate of the 24 ways of
figuring things out that I have systematized:
https://www.math4wisdom.com/files/matematikos-issiaiskinimo-budai700.png
Here is a presentation about that which I am redoing from scratch:
https://www.math4wisdom.com/wiki/Research/DiscoveryInMathematics
I have made an initial video about that, "Surface Structure vs. Deep
Structure"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_xJ_ph0cwM
which received 600 views in the first 3 days and so this series may
generate interest.

The word "context" is just a label. But these examples are real. And, more
importantly, the method is real. It is not "words" or a "metaphor" that
point to something else.  It is rather a reality that words and metaphors
can point to.  Which is to say, it is much more important than words and
metaphors.

Similarly, Kirby's distinction between Supermarket Math and Casino Math is
much deeper than words.  Supermarket Math, I would say, is math for
tracking things.  It is very physical, in that physics teaches that every
answer consists of an amount and a unit. Similarly, programming languages
have us declare the type of a variable. Is X a string? or a bit? or a
(long) integer? or a (double) decimal number?  Thus we have type theory:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_theory
Thus I would tutor students basic principles such as "Add means combine
like units to simplify", "Add means list different units to show the
answer".  So 2 apples + 3 apples = 5 apples, 2 millions + 3 millions = 5
millions, 2 thirds + 3 thirds = 5 thirds, 2 X + 3 X = 5 X.  But 2 fourths +
3 thirds is just a list.  We may run a marathon in 2 hours + 28 minutes +
32 seconds and that is how we show the answer but we convert to seconds if
we want to calculate.  Anyways, Supermarket Math is math where we use units
because we are tracking something (in a database).  Whereas with Casino
Math we have math for the sake of managing math.  Similarly, in the economy
we can use money to buy things or we can use money to manage money.

Philosophically, at the heart of this, is the "mind game" of attention.
Our attention can pay attention to something else (like a whistle - an
object). But subsequently our attention may pay attention to itself (thus
we have a process).  And in order to play this mind game we need a
(subject) who pays the attention.  Thus this mind game defines object,
process, subject not as words, not as metaphors, but as perspectives with
relationships as given in this mind game. I talk about this and three other
mind games here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x69-Xxv6L0&t=1875s

Kirby, Jon, the more we interact, the more I will be able to point out such
frameworks as they arise naturally in our interactions. Jon mentioned "What
we experience is the space-time truth which is ALWAYS nested within a
context." (March 2) The divisions of everything are the frameworks by which
our experience gets nested within a context.  So, for example, the context
may be the issue of existence, in which case we need access to two
perspectives, one (speculative question) in which a chair may or may not
exist, and another (definitive answer) whereby, if it exists, then it
exists, if not, then not.  That framework is not a metaphor but rather is
(I claim) precisely the mental state that we are in when we are absorbed in
this context, this matter of existence.

My claims may or may not be true, there may be more or less evidence for
them, but they are incomprehensible if we don't think of them (improve
them, reject them) in terms of absolute truth.  So there are major
obstacles for me to be understood even by Jon and Kirby, who are making
some effort but, like most people, haven't developed personal experience -
of a positive kind - with absolute truth.

I suppose it's unhelpful to think of me as a mathematician.  Since
childhood, I have dedicated myself to knowing everything and applying that
knowledge usefully.  That makes me a thinker, and perhaps, a philosopher,
or more relevantly, a sage. I did teach philosophy part-time at VGTU for
two years, I have given more than 40 academic talks about my own original
philosophy, including three at the World Congress of Philosophy and three
at the World Congress of Universal Logic.
https://www.math4wisdom.com/wiki/Research/Writings
I earned a BA in Physics and a PhD in Philosophy as part of that quest, not
instead of it. I do need to overview my philosophy, the language of
"wondrous wisdom", and so I am making videos about that.

My philosophy works on four levels:
* Existentialism regarding Why - I take up questions that address my
relationship with everything, the sum of my life, and how that relates to
what is beyond
* Structuralism regarding How - I express truth in a language of cognitive
frameworks of perspectives which define those perspectives by way of their
relationships with each other
* Phenomenology regarding What - I model that which I personally
experience, but especially, the choices that I am able to make with myself
* Pragmatism regarding Whether - I take my understanding of the limits of
my own imagination, in accord with my experience in life and the sense I
make from others, as absolute truth, albeit tentatively and pragmatically

Absolute truth means that I am not interested in "a truth" but rather "the
truth".  My deepest value is "living by truth" and so my relationship with
truth has to be pragmatic and tentative. But it is not intended a a
personal truth, it is intended as a universal truth. One consequence is
that I am sensitive to distinctions.

For example, in mathematics I distinguish between:
* Implicit math vs explicit math
* Pre-systemic math vs. Systemic math
* Natural math vs. contrived math

Studying the ways of figuring things out leads to a distinction between
contrived, superficial, explicit, axiomatic math (like the binary numbers
"1 + 1 = 10" or the decimal numbers "1 + 1 = 2") which we do on paper, and
the mathematical activity which takes place in our minds (notably, the
realization that we need to appreciate the "context").  I have collected
and sorted 200 examples and systematized 24 ways of figuring things out.
These ways include concepts like the "center" of a problem, "balance"
(numerator and denominator), a "set" (of solutions  to a polynomial), a
"list" (of vectors), a "group of symmetries".  Such concepts are natural
math, as opposed to contrived math.

Natural math is discovered, whereas contrived math is invented.  Most of
math, including most of Buckminster Fuller's math, is contrived. It is
artificial, and in that sense, not meaningful in the way that natural math
is meaningful.

Is a tetrahedron a part of natural math? Usually not.  It is part of
natural math when the tetrahedron itself is the structure of the solution.
But then it may be simply a list (of four vectors) and so that's not really
a tetrahedron.  Perhaps it may arise as a symmetry group of possibilities.
And then it may be just the four discrete points. I am not aware of an
example where the tetrahedron is "the struture of the relationships in the
discovery process of the mind" rather than "the object drawn on the
paper".

Is the concentric hierarchy part of natural math?  Basically not.  If there
was a problem where it described the "group of symmetries" key to solving a
problem, then perhaps. But that seems remote.  Kirby, the more you write
about the concentric hierarchy, the more it seems artificial.  I think that
I am failing to explain that there is a domain of natural math which
mathematicians don't care about because they just churn out more math for
math's sake.  I think Buckminster Fuller and you likewise have a sense that
certain math is more natural.  I can ask you, What is your methodology in
deciding what is natural?  And I can share with you my methodology, which
is to look not at the math problem on the paper, but on the math ideas that
arise in the mind in solving the problem.

Jon writes about a "system" and a perspective upon a system.  But that
supposes a system, and a self-standing system supposes, in my
understanding, a logical square with seven perspectives, perhaps as you
say, so that we can distinguish inside and outside and not inside and not
outside and "inside and not outside" and "outside and not inside" and "not
inside and not outside".  And the whole system collapses when we are
"inside and outside" because then the system must be empty and those words
have no meaning as opposites.  The divisions of everything are what lead up
to there being a self-standing system.

Jon refers to physics as if it was real, as if three dimensions or four
dimensions were real, as if physical theories were real.  But all of those
theories change rapidly, are suspect to begin with, and physicists agree
that the best of the theories - quantum field theory - is certainly wrong
conceptually - and general relativity is likewise wrong in some greater
sense. From my view, it is backwards to start with physics.  Physics is
best left alone. What is real are the choices that we personally can make
in life, the limitations on the kinds of choices that we can make.

Jon raises questions (March 1): Theory of Everything (or ultimate truth)
concepts we could explore, are:
1) the relationships between the unknown but ubiquitous anti matter, and
the octahedron (space between stacked tetrahedrons) and perhaps the 5th
Element metaphor.
2) the challenge of explaining reality in terms of "process" rather than
"particles" (matter). Emergently tries to avoid tangible "desired outcomes"
and focus on understanding interdependencies and process. Basil Hiley is
currently working on the mathematics of the Quantum Potential in terms of
process as an alternative to our standard explanation of reality in terms
of smaller and smaller particles.

My remarks above about object, process, subject relate to "particles"
(objects) and "process".  We need (I want) to account for all perspectives
and we need (I want) to focus on the reality of those distinctions with
regard to how they affect our personal choices (rather than a purported
real world).

I keep wide open the possibility that the Emergently framework is real,
partly because of respect for your and Yoshimi's personal experience, and
partly because it could relate to the framework by which the unconscious
communicates to the conscious, and vice versa, as I presented here:

Jon, if you are interested, I would find it very meaningful to try to make
sense of the Emergently framework from an outsider's point of view, which
means trying to check and confirm what is real about it and why.  That
would mean starting from the basics of it.  And also I think it would be
helpful to go beyond it in terms of what else would you say is real and
why.  But I think least helpful for me would be speculative questions about
mathematical contrivances, such as gaps between tetrahedra.  Why do you
suppose your tetrahedra are solid and not liquid? If they are liquid or
plastic, they don't need to have any gaps.  And why would two tetrahedra be
next to each other in the first place?  But if we start from first
principles, then those principles will tell us the relationships, and the
math will follow.

Perhaps some basic questions from me would be, What are elements? How do we
know what is an element? How do we know that two elements are different?
In what sense can two elements overlap or not? How do we know how many
elements there are?

Prior to such questions would be to ask, Why should we try to answer such
questions?  For me, it is clear that if you and I could agree about such
cognitive frameworks, then we would have the beginnings of an understanding
of a language of cognitve frameworks.  But then we need to think how could
we share an understanding if, for example, your framework is simply a
metaphor, whereas my frameworks express absolute truth?  So there may be a
lot of preliminary work to do.  But if we're both interested then it could
be very valuable for both us and also others who may join in.

So along with What questions could we investigate together? I ask us also
to consider Why investigate together? and Why that particular question?
