The spider crabs are awesome to see but you need to know where to look.

There have been no reports at all of crabs at Rye so I would give that a
miss. All the action has been at Blairgowrie so far this year.

The crabs are currently moulting at Blairgowrie. They are at the very far
end of the jetty. This is a HUGE swim! In effect you have to go all the way
to the end of the first section of the jetty and when you get to the end you
turn left. You continue along this "T section" of the jetty as far as it
goes. And I mean as far as it goes!!! This section is VERY long since it was
extended in the recent upgrade work that they did on the marina. The crabs
are right at the end of this section, so you need to go all the way to the
end.

In terms of practicality I personally can't complete this dive underwater on
a single 12 litre tank. Those with very good air consumption probably can. I
would say your minimum dive time will be 90 mins, but if you want to spend a
reasonable time videoing or photographing the crabs then you may want to
allow up to 2 hours. The other practicality to keep in mind is that water
temp is now around 12-13C. If you feel the cold or don't have a fully
adequate suit you may not last the distance before you get way too cold.

Options:
1. If you think air consumption will be an issue then consider snorkelling
all the way out there (probably 20 mins or so swimming), descend when you
get to the crabs, spend a bit of time with them (and the cuttlefish, occys
etc) then swim underwater back to shore along the jetty. I did this the
other day and I spent around 70 mins underwater to see the crabs and swim
back (so total time in the water including surface swim out there would have
been approx. 90 mins).
2. Same as above but swim out there underwater and then swim back on snorkel
if your air gets too low.
3. Jump off the jetty out near the end - it is probably a bit of a drop to
the water but potentially doable. This would save you a bit of swimming
time, but of course means carrying your gear a fair way.
Remember that if you are in a 7mm wetsuit/semidry you will probably get
pretty cold by the end of the dive (unless you are like my buddy today who
spent almost 3 hours in the 12C water!!)

I'm not trying to put you off this fabulous experience. In fact I would
strongly recommend it. But be aware of your own limitations with regard to
air and the cold. Also be aware that the crabs come and go and can literally
disappear overnight. They have been in the location I have mentioned for
several days and I suspect they will hang around that area a bit longer but
they could all be gone by tomorrow for all I know!

I tried to attach a photo from today but the system rejected it as being too
large. If you want to keep an eye on the most up to date info and see a good
selection of photos you could join the Spider Crabs Melbourne Facebook page.

Cheers,
Dave

Subject: [MASC] Shore diving Saturday 18th - SPIDER CRABS!

Hey diveroonies!
It's that time of year when the spider crab crew are doing their regular
commute to Port Phillip, all hundreds of thousands of them...

SO, I was planning on hunting them down this Saturday, at probably Rye or
Blairgowrie, you'll be so mesmerized by the masses you won't even feel the
slightly cooler temp :p

Let me know if you're keen, and if you need gear K-Ham will be opening the
locker tomorrow night, refer to that email.

Cheers,

Georgie
