Greetings, MARC Members and Friends of MARC!
Once again, we will be having our 2nd meeting of the month, our
so-called "advanced topics" class. The meeting will be this Thursday,
September 8th 2022 at 6:30 PM at Murray Fire Department station #81,
which is located at 4848 S Box Elder St (approximately 35 W). We will
have a brief "check-in" net prior to the meeting at 6:00 on 223.440 MHz
simplex (no tone or offset).
The meeting this week will be spent discussing and experimenting with
Pat, which is an open source implementation of the Winlink client
protocols. Pat can be used on Windows, Mac, and Linux (and likely other
Unix platforms as well) and is written in the "Go" language. In
general, if you are a Windows user, you probably want to be using
Winlink Express (the "official" client), but if you are a Linux user,
Mac user, or want to run Winlink on a Raspberry Pi or other Single Board
Computer, you will want to learn about using Pat.
In other news, our own Dan (N7XDL) will be helping out with the Wasatch
100 this weekend. This 100 mile run will take place over Friday and
Saturday. Dan will be working at the Decker Canyon rest area, which is
located at the following GPS coordinates: 40.463797, -111.512493. Dan
has said that anyone who has time to kill Friday afternoon/evening or on
Saturday and wants to spend some time playing radio this weekend is
welcome to come up to the rest area and check out what he's doing.
He'll be using packet radio to record runners as they come through the
rest area (likely starting late Friday evening), so if you're curious
about packet radio and want to see it in action, this will be a great
opportunity.
Finally, if you missed our first CERT training class last week, the Fire
Department has advised that they will be running another series on
Tuesdays coming up and you can take the first session with that group
even if you want to take the rest of the sessions with our group. If
you want to take advantage of this, let me know and I'll get you the info.
Hope to see you all at the meeting this Thursday!
