[macvoiceover] using time machine

Hi list members. I went to use time machine to backup my Mac book pro.
However, time machine is saying that it needs to erase the external
drive which I am trying to backup to. Is this correct? I don't want to
erase my external hard drive. Am I doing something wrong?
