Hey Dan,

Awesome! That worked for me in Text Edit and Mail! Thanks so much!

Hello,
I forgot one item that's really important. Instead of Command Semicolon, it is Command Shift Colon. The computer will say something like, The misspelled word then spelling and grammar. or, if it's already been activated, it will close the spellchecker and it will say, hide spelling and grammar. Additionally, After you press VO F2 twice, sometimes it takes 2 to 5 seconds before the window is available to down arrow to. I never have a problem in doing it this way.

Hi Dan,

Your solution sounds a lot better than mine, however, when I press VO F2 twice, the spell checker window doesn't show up in the list. I tried it in Mail, and it doesn't show up there either Any ideas? <smile>

Hello,
Hope you don't mind me jumping in here.
This is how I do spellchecking in both Mail and TextEdit or any other word processor for that matter.
These instructions are using the full apple keyboard.
1. Command Semicolon, to here the first misspelled word.
2. VO F2 twice and arrow down to spellchecker window and press enter. 3. Tab between the available words and press enter. Note, VO W works just fine for reading the currently available choice before you press enter. And you can always press VO W twice for the correct spelling of the choice, or 3 times for the phonetic spelling. 4. each time you press enter, you will be taken to the next misspelled word. If you are at the end of the list of misspelled words, the computer will make the bonk noise and you then press Escape to get back to your document. If at any time you want to get back to the document without further spellchecking, just press escape. This works in all places where you want to spellcheck. I've never had any problems with this method.
Now, let me say one other little thing regarding cursor tracking.
I have all of the cursor tracking items checked.

Hi Mark and all,

I found a way to spell check in Text Edit, but it's a bit tedious. What I do is press command semicolon. The first misspelled word is highlighted. I press VO shift M, which brings up a menu of suggested spelling replacements. I down arrow to the correct one and press enter. I then start the process over, i.e. press command semicolon, the next misspelled word is highlighted, VO shift M, choose the correct word, press return... and so on and so on! <grin>

I haven't found a way to get VO to spell the suggested replacements, but I have my PacMate Braille display connected, so can use that to check for the correct suggestion.

try command-colon and turn off the ruller.

Hi, Chris:
I get similar behaviors here; however, I have absolutely no problem using Mail's spell check, and like you, have it set to auto-check before sending. I have a larger document that I tried to spell-check with TextEdit, and expected the behaviors to be similar to spell-check in Mail. However, I found that no matter what I tried--Command Accent, VO shift F2 twice for window chooser, even command-tab into and out of the window, that I couldn't get VO to focus on the spell-check window I've come to know and love. It would land me on a word it didn't recognize, but there were no specific controls that VO would read, as it should. VO navigation only showed me the ruler or the whole document, not a specific spell-check window. I'm puzzled at the moment.
