Hello Marty,
There are several options for what to do when deleting.
In the VO utility under Verbosity and under Text, go to the pop-up button for deleting and you can make several changes.
They are, Do nothing, play tone, change pitch or speak.
I, for example, have mine to speak.

Hi all, have you noticed, or so it seems, that Alex seems to be behaving something like eloquence? I have noticed a change in pitch in his voice when capitalizing a letter, and Alex's voice drops dramatically in pitch when erasing some letters, if you make a mistake with backspace, try it and see with snow leopard. I did write accessibility about it, but it may just be a new alex, not sure.
