[macvoiceover] problems opening a file

Hi guys,
I don't normally have a problem on my mac with VO but I had a file
sent to me today in XLS format, and I see it has something to do with
microsoft work book, which I have never come across before even when I
was on the windows platform.
Can anyone give me any tips of what to open this with VO because I
tried open office and tried to interact with the table to no avail.
any help would be greatly appreciated as it is a schedule for a
volunteer programme I'm participating in.
