Well Russell, that's a question I was hoping you wouldn't ask. I know what
the support documentation says, which is to add the pdf to your library in
iTunes, then copy it to your books folder on your iPhone in the devices
section of iTunes. I've done it with anEPub book, which iTunes knows is a
book, but I've never tried it with a pdf. I'll have a chance to try it later
and will let you know if it worked or not.
