Yeah, that's exactly how it works. We got a Macbook air for my girlfriend this way three months ago. It was an ad on facebook, and we had to refer many people. Actually we basically did it on their behalf once they gave us permission to do so. Some of the offers they want you to take are not trials. I had to sign up for an internet TV service which cost $20.00 and it lasts for a year. It's actually not that bad, and they gave me a Mac for it. They don't make it easy for you, but if you do it all they have no choice but to send you the computer :).

These offers tend to be scams.

Not scams exactly, but certainly stacked against you to actually get the promised free thing. Generally they work like this:

1) Fill in your Email and zip code, also name and address;

2) Complete several "sponsor offers". Generally these are categorized such that you have to complete a certain number of offers from (seemingly arbitrary) groups of offers; i.e. two offers from group 1, three offers from group 2, and one offer from group 3, for instance. These are often free trials that you have to remember to cancel (unless you like them), credit card apps, and the like. I've seen some of these where the final offers you need to complete are impossible or crappy, thus my mention of stacking the deck.

3) Then, and here's the tricky bit, you often have to refer a certain number of people to the site. Not only do these people have to visit the site, but they have to complete the offers just like you did.

They can afford to do these promotions because they get all the advertising and affiliate commissions from all the people who complete offers. Many of those won't fulfill all the requirements; maybe they'll manage completing the offers but not getting the referrals, for instance.

There are forums where people "trade" signups, i.e. I'll sign up for yours if you sign up for mine, or if you sign up for mine I'll pay you once you complete all the offers. So I reckon people can actually get stuff from these sites, but it isn't nearly so easy as the site would have you believe.
