Greg.
My understanding as to how finder knows what to launch when certain things are done (such as inserting a disk, clicking a file type, and so on) is the file extension/actions listed in the table of such items kept in a database on the disk. I.E. it is possible to change the system preferences to launch a 3rd party dvd player when a disk is inserted instead of the apple supplied one. Also, since you can change what osx does with file extensions (I.E. launch itunes to play mp3 files, or quicktime, and so on) is all done via file associations. I've not looked specifically for how to do this, but there is an application called rcdefault which will allow you to change these default actions. There's likely an apple technical document explaining the process. I'd suggest tapping into that mechanism instead of using apple scripts under finder if possible. That way, you'd be guaranteed that your app would launch automatically when a daisy book was inserted instead of having the user need to configure things.
