I don't know about Skype or Adium, but if they work like iChat, you could try 
turning off cursor tracking, using control-option-shift-F3. That way, you can 
just keep the keyboard cursor focused in the typing field, and have the VO 
cursor in the chat frame. You have to remember to switch it back on if you 
switch to a different program, though. I've forgotten a few times and been 
really confused. :)
