There is a button to turn it on and off, which you can also use to put it in and out of sleep mode. I'm guessing VO will tell you which stage it's in. But as of now, it's impossible for us to know. Sometimes I move my girlfriend's iPod touch from one place to another and it happens to be on, and I touch at something but the thing doesn't make any sounds.
