Hi,

Mail does occasionally do funky things to me.  First, I'm curious what your 
setup is exactly.  Which Mac are you using, etc.  and of course, are you 
running 10.6.3 etc.

Have you killed Voiceover and then restarted it?  Occasionally, I have problems 
with VO being sluggish and wonky in mail.  


Also, what kind of mail are you using?  Meaning, do you get mail on your 
machine, or does it live in the cloud somewhere and you are just reading it 
through your mail client?

this leads me to ask your connectivity and if possible network or connection 
problems to the mail server, etc might be at work.  

I think there are some older versions of the imap protocol which don't play 
with Apple Mail.  This is just one example of something you might want to 
research.

I'm not sure about how to log errors and such in Mail, but I think that would 
be a great step as well.
