Hi
A few issues crop up when a monitor is not attached to the Mini. First, the system responsiveness goes down a bit, and you can notice this when using Voiceover that it is not as snappy as it should be. It affects the entire system however, not just Voiceover. The second issue you may run into is that playback of Video files in some applications will fail, giving you an error that they cannot initialize the video device. One way to avoid this, obviously, is to connect a monitor. However, if you don't have a monitor or don't want to hook one up to the mini, you can purchase the DVI to S-video/composite adapter, I think it costs around $19. That adapter has enough circuitry in it to fool the mini into thinking you have a monitor plugged in, even if you have nothing else hooked up to the other end of the adapter. That adapter is designed to connect the Mini to a TV set or projector without a DVI input, so it needs to emulate some of the basic functions of a monitor in order to work properly, which allows you to use the mini with just the small adapter connected and no monitor.

Hi,
The Mini does not need a monitor plugged in. You don't even need a
mouse.

I'm writing this message on a Mini with a keyboard connected, and
it's power supply.

When I bought my mini, the mic and web cam were not important to
have built in.

True the Mini does not run on battery but it's small enough to carry
around the house, moving it from room to room if you have AC power.

Hope this helps.

The only way to know is to try a Mac.
The price you mentioned sounds reasonable but remember the MacMini
is not a laptop. It's a very small desktop and it needs you to give it a keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc. As far as I know, it won't work
without a monitor but I may be wrong.
I'd personally recommend an iMac if you want a desktop or a Macbook
Pro if you need a laptop.
I also don't think the mini has a built-in mic or webcam like the
iMac does.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [macvoiceover] getting a mac

hello
I found a mac mini for $450 on amazon with the latest mac OS
leopard. What are the advantages of mac over windows? Do more
applications work on the mac than work on windows? I also want to
get a mac so I can finally use the pipe organ voice! I used a mac
in Colorado and liked it. but I also like my windows machine as
well. I have a windows xp netbook. I wonder if it would play nicely
with the mac mini?

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.
