Hi Ginny,
you either had an IBook or a powerbbook. If we join the right apple forums,
we might be able to find those who use garage band and maybe we'll even be
able to find folk who use garage band with vo but as I remember it, garage
band was not nearly accessible with vo when i played with it a couple of
years ago. Now, I also remember a demo that I did not attend here in town
showing the "accessibility" of garage band, but the fess up was that it did
not center around vo.

So here's my question. When I purchased my first Mac--a Mac laptop before
the Macbook--what was that one called again?--anyhow, I purchased it in
Chicago at an Apple store where there were several "geniuses" who knew VO
really well. One, in fact, was going to be teaching a seminar on using VO
with GB the very next week. But since I didn't live in Chicago, I wasn't
going to be there. Now how in the world can we track down the sighted Mac
geeks who actually know aps like GB and understand VO enough to figure out
some of these things we're baffled by? I just believe they have to be out
there somewhere, but they don't seem to work for AppleCare. <grin> I'm
still amazed that when I call AppleCare, most of their "tech support" peeps
know nothing about VO--not even what it is. I'm going to make it my mission
to track down a genius who is really a genius. <grin>

Ah, I have seen this menu of which you speak. the tip I saw was on how to
move the windows so that they are adjacent. I find it tedious to do this
mouse stuff but will give it a shot when things are jumping a bit less for
me.
As far as sighted assistance, I've had some when I was working with fb, but
it wasn't much help because they could not tell what I was doing with vo for
some reason.

Ah yes...that is what I feared...the windows aren't adjacent and therefore
the item cannot be dragged and dropped by those without the use of their
eyes. Grrr. The drum loops aren't accessible, but the drum kits are--when
you select them from the instrument group there next to the track payne with
the arrows. The quantizing feature is usually the very last thing in the
effects section, as far as I can tell. I believe there's a checkbox for
tempo, then a menu with note values from which you select the one that you'd
like for your track to be quantized to, and then a percent slider bar where
you select how much you want the track quantized. You can also select
reverb, compression type, and E Q in the preceeding menus in the same way.
It works pretty well. I'm happy to write a guide, but I want to get a
sighted assistant to watch what I'm doing first so that I don't tell you
anything incorrect as far as what's on the screen. I can tell you how to
get to the various options, but I'm just not sure exactly what's going on in
the "big picture." Make sense? As soon as I can find a pair of eyes that
know how to look at a Mac, I'll get the guide up and going. <grin> Unless
someone else beats me to it.

I have found this as well but what does vo call quantize? can you do
anything with any of the other effects than drumkits or am I way off base?
As I understand it and I have not read the tutorial but followed the drag
and drop thread, you need to get the two windows adjacent to one another so
that you can carry something from one to annother with no obstruction. it
is the obstruction that kills.

OK, I'm not ready to do a guide yet, because this might prove to be info
which no one cares about-or which everyone else already knows. <grin> I am
often the last to figure out things.
I have concluded that from within a track, one can click "editor" then right
arrow over to "effects" and then click the arrow button. This should allow
many effects to pop up including the ability to quantize" your track-though
it is not called quantize. It's also possible to add certain amp
simulations, EWS, compressors, reverbs, filters, and distortion from this
same spot. I am happy to go into further detail with anyone who is
interested in this bit, though, like I say, I might be the last to figure it
out. <grin>
The great news is that we can create our own loops from the drum kits
because we can quantize.
Now, here's something I'd like to ask any of you who are willing to have an
adventure. I spent some time working through the steps of VaShaun's
wonderful tutorial on dragging and dropping. And when I contacted AppleCare
to ask the GB tech support about this, she said that we were able to drag
and drop the loops from the finder into garage band projects. I couldn't do
it, but I thought maybe one of you wonderfully smart folks might try this.
Go to finder, library, audio, apple loops, apple, apple loops for garage
band. See if you can paste any of those loops to into a garage band
project. I tried three times and couldn't do it, but I think it could be
me.
