I did find the check box and it was checked. I unchecked it but no joy. So I
clicked the box in shutdown which says open windows when logging back in. And
if I leave the mail open it works fine. So its a work around but it works.

Me as well. Another shot in the dark, but could there be a system dialog
that is opening that you are not seeing? Try the application chooser or
window chooser menus to see if there might be some kind of message or
dialog blocking the inbox window. Again, just tossing stuff at the wall
