Actually, it is more than that. It checks to see if you appear to be alert
(can't remember actual wording) like your eyes are open and some of us don't
really control our eyes. From what was said, just holding it in front of your
face won't be enough; well, for most sighted people it would be enough but it
might not be for us.

The phone is able to recognize your face instead of your fingerprint, which has
nothing to do with you being blind or cited. When they say you have to look at
the phone to unlock it it means it needs to be in front of your face, just like
when you are talking to someone on FaceTime. It doesn’t mean you need to see
the phone! It’s just a different security system. Given Apple’s track record
these past few years I have no reason to doubt that we will be able to use it.

I don't like that you can just touch your Iphone 10 and It will
unlock, that doesn't sound safe at all. I think for sighted people,
face recognition will be very useful, but for us blind people, I
didn't hear anything that made me go wow. I think It sounds ok, but my
Iphone 6S does everything I need. The 256 Ram is a very good thing,
but that already was in the Iphone 7.

Just did a quick read of some articles, and of course they’re not saying
what the alternatives are, like how you could always use a passcode or not
have a lock on your phone, also no indication of how a really visual
technologywill work for us. My favourite line in one of the articles was,
keep your snazzy new iPhone away from your evil twin.

maybe nobody on here knows the answer to this yet. If the iPhone 10 uses
face ID but only works if your eyes aren't closed and you are looking at
it, will quite a few of us who are totally blind still be able to use it?
