Hi Russell,
as for the headset, we might both be using the same or similar ones 
manufactured by Logitech. Nope, this doesn't affect your boot up time.
And yes, the installation DVD does include VO. When the DVD is inserted into 
your drive, press and hold down the C key while your Mac is booting. Keep the C 
key pressed until you hear the DVD spinning up in the drive, then let go. Now, 
just wait until the DVD stops completely, then press Command f5. Afterwards, 
you should hear the DVD start spinning again, and VO should begin talking 
shortly after.
