The remote can be used with Front Row. For more information about Front Row, including keyboard shortcuts to control Front Row, open Mac Help and search for Front Row.

Yes, I got a remote with my last mac mini and wondered if it was at all accessible. It's sitting in a drawer because I haven't gotten around to trying to figure it out.
