I am pasting a message posted by Esther that will provide the information you require.

HI James,

According to Dan's post on the Mac Mini in the list archives, the dvi-
to-vga adapter will not work. It's the DVI to Composite/SVGA adapter
that he was able to use to fool the mini into thinking a monitor was
connected. Here's Dan's post about this in the thread "DVD problem
fixed":

http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/msg37007.html

Note again that this is NOT the DVI to VGA adapter. In the Apple Store
it's called "Apple DVI to Video Adapter" and lists for $19:

Hope this clarifies things.

Cheers,

Esther

I don't have a monitor plugged in, and will not go out of my way to
get one. I've tried plugging in the dvi-to-vga adapter thing, but I
don't think it had an effect (I know apps which crashed or errored due
to lack of video such as dvd player or anything relying on OpenGL
didn't behave differently). I upgraded it with ram from newegg - I
don't remember whether or not it was apple-licensed or whatever. It
was certainly cheaper overall than it would've cost to get the mac
mini w/ 2 gigs out of the box (believe it or not - that's apple for
you). I'd disable the dashboard but really haven't bothered - I
think I heard about some sort of commercial solution, but why run
another app just to disable one which is already running (spotless to
disable spotlight etc)? It doesn't sound right. Oh well... I've got
on for a little over a year this way, I suppose I can continue. It's
really finder which gives me the most grief - iTunes is pretty
well-behaved since 8.x (excluding smart playlists which I have yet to
try out again).

Does your harddrive sound healthy? Have you upgraded the ram with non
apple approoved memory (IT REALLY DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE)

Hi James.

Have you closed all the widgets? I've experienced that widgets makes
my Macbook pretty slow.

I did a brief search to see if this was mentioned before, only to
find
something on Mac Mini's issues when a mouse isn't hooked up.

Certain apps are impossibly slow with my mac mini. These range
from
iTunes (smart playlist editor and just occasional unexplainable
"busy"s from voiceover no matter what I'm doing) to Finder (Copy
and
other warning dialogues literally hang voiceover for up to 10
seconds
before they read anything (only to be interupted by the
announcement
that finder is ready; attempting o read it again results in another
wait and usually another message interupting the desired
information).
I've a 2.0 ghz 2 gb ram mac mini, and I think it's pretty well
equipped to handle something like a dialogue box in finder without
hanging so frustratingly. Anyone else having similar issues with
minis? I tried my roommate's new macbook and it's a lot more
responsive - I haven't interacted with a finder dialogue or similar
but switching apps is a little faster.

James

Tell me what adapter, is it the one that came with your Mac?
That would be sweet if that's all I had to do.

not sure what your first question is but if it is will your dusty mice
work on your mini, probably so. as to your second question, it has
been reported that plugging an monitor or special null monitor adaptor
should fix this issue.

I have two questions regarding my Mac Mini which is 5 days old.
First, someone told me that the Mac would run better if I attached a
mouse. When I went to the Apple store to make my purchase, they
wanted
to sell me a mouse for $50. No way was I going to put down that kind
of
money for a rodent. However, I have a few USB mice that are gathering
dust that I could connect if necessary.
Second, web pages download at a snail's pace on my Mac. I don't know
why this is so, but my cheapy Windows netbook downloads web pages far
faster than the Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. It should be noted
that
the Mac has a much faster processor than my netbook, so I am wondering
if there are settings I should change or is this simply how Macs do
things? I am not picking on my Mac, I am simply asking for information
here.
Thank you all.
