Hi Sara & all,

Yes, it worked in Leopard, but as I said in a previous post, I had to turn off the reading of text attributes because of VO constantly reading font info as I type a message in Mail. Ideally, it'd be nice to have a keystroke to get text attributes rather than having them read out all the time, but I guess we take what we can get, hey? I will take your suggestion Sara, and write to access @apple.com to let them know the types of things we as blind users need to have in a word processor! <smile>

Oh, it worked in Leopard too? Cool.
I guess you have to keep turning that on and off to prevent all that extra reading and only on when you need to hear it.
If only they'd make it work with braille...

Hey Keith,

I just tried this and it works quite well. When a word is italic VO says "Italic" and when it finished reading the word, it says, "plain". The only problem is now as I am typing this email, the font attributes are constantly being read to me, even though they're not changing. I keep hearing, "12 point Helvetica black on black" This is very annoying. Is this fixed in SL?

Thanks,

Russell

Hi Russell,

Yes this works quite well in textedit.
Do the following,
In verbosity, click on the text tab.
Next, VO-right arrow to where it says, when text atributes change and with the pop up button select, speak atribute.

It will give you lots of information about your document.

You can open word files in TextEdit.

does the new attributes not work guys? I had it switched on and it was annoying me during using syrinx so I haven't used it.

Hi Sara,

I've had limited success with the word processor in Open Office. The reason I say limited is that I haven't found a way to get VO to tell me whether text is formatted as bold, italic, or underlined, or whether text has a heading style. I did the minutes for a meeting using Open Office, but then had to take the document to my Windows machine so that I could check the formatting. So, yes I guess you're right about needing a Windows machine to do word processing! Hope that this will not always be the case. (fingers crossed) <smile>

Hi Russell.
What do you use for word processing?
I still have to use Windows for that.

Hey May! I'm glad to hear you're making the switch. I bought an iMac in early August and absolutely love it! There are some things I am not able to do on the Mac yet, though, like embossing on my Braille Blazer, working with databases, although someone said there is a database app, Bento, I think, that is supposed to be accessible... will try it later.

May, I don't think you will regret switching, just keep a Windows machine around until you're able to do all you need on the Mac.

Hi everyone, my name is May and I am waiting for my first Macbook. I have been a windows user forever so looking forward to the new learning experience.

I have an IPhone my first apple product and absolutely love it. It took me only 24 hours to figure out all I needed to know to use it to my satisfaction.

Now ready for the bigger challenge of learning the computer, smile.

May, it's time for school and goalball

Keith's word is definitely good. I never thought I would switch from JAWS. I got a Mac for a single contract and now Macs and other Apple products are in so many places around my house that we look like an auxiliary Apple store (without the goofy t-shirts).

If you choose the switch, jump in with both feet, ask questions and enjoy the goodies.

Hi Jim and welcome,

I think what folks are trying to say is, its different. I came from Windows, using JFW and Window-Eyes and DOS before that.

The learning curve is not steep, the Mac is fast and I can do more with a MAC than I could have imagined.

I work in an office, I play around on the web, I am a musition, I record and I do it all with the MAC and Voiceover.

I think that folks want you to know that it is different and yes it is worth it to learn it.

Play around with a MAC, don't just take my word for it, but, my word is good.

I do second this notion Chantelle, forgetting the windows platform is essential when learning the mac. I bet those of us who forgot it learned the mac a lot easier than those who could not let go of windows for one reason or another. it is definitely easier to forget it, but for some easier said than done. :)

Hi, Jim,
I am going to tell you right now that you need to forget all that you know about windows when it comes to using your mac. Mac is very different from windows in the way that the screen reads things, and the way you navigate the screen is different. With the mac, you must interact with tables and other things by hitting control option shift down arrow.
Stop interacting by hitting control option shift up arrow.
