Yes this works quite well in textedit.
Do the following,
In verbosity, click on the text tab.
Next, VO-right arrow to where it says, when text atributes
change and with the pop up button select, speak atribute.
It will give you lots of information about your document.
You can open word files in TextEdit.

bought an iMac in early August and absolutely love it!
There are some things I am not able to do on the Mac yet,

May, I don't think you will regret switching, just keep a
Windows machine around until you're able to do all you need
on the Mac.

Keith's word is definitely good. I never thought I would
switch from JAWS. I got a Mac for a single contract and
now Macs and other Apple products are in so many places
around my house that we look like an auxiliary Apple store
(without the goofy t-shirts).
If you choose the switch, jump in with both feet, ask
questions and enjoy the goodies.

I do second this notion Chantelle, forgetting the windows
platform is essential when learning the mac. I bet those
of us who forgot it learned the mac a lot easier than
those who could not let go of windows for one reason or
another. it is definitely easier to forget it, but for
some easier said than done. :)
