Hmmm, that's how I'm opening the utilities. I see a "General" as the first
item in the table, but the only things there are the login greeting and what to
do when portable preferences are detected. Under verbosity, i only get the two
tabs, text and announcements. Don't know what's going on here!

      Hi Dan, David & all,

I'm not seeing a general tab under verbosity, only a text tab and an
Announcements tab. You guys must be talking about Snow Leopard, which, of
course, I don't have yet! <smile>

I'll just set text attributes change to "do nothing" till my SL arrives.

      Thanks,

      Hello,
You need to go to the VoiceOver menu and select verbosity and under
the general tab, select the medium pop-up option. You won't find this
      when using the VO-V command.

I just tried this and it works quite well. When a word is italic

VO says "Italic" and when it finished reading the word, it says,

"plain". The only problem is now as I am typing this email, the

font attributes are constantly being read to me, even though

they're not changing. I keep hearing, "12 point Helvetica black on

black" This is very annoying. Is this fixed in SL?

          Thanks,

Yes this works quite well in textedit.

            Do the following,

In verbosity, click on the text tab.

Next, VO-right arrow to where it says, when text atributes change

and with the pop up button select, speak atribute.

It will give you lots of information about your document.

You can open word files in TextEdit.

                Hi Sara,

I've had limited success with the word processor in Open

Office. The reason I say limited is that I haven't found a way

to get VO to tell me whether text is formatted as bold, italic,

or underlined, or whether text has a heading style. I did the

minutes for a meeting using Open Office, but then had to take

the document to my Windows machine so that I could check the

formatting. So, yes I guess you're right about needing a

Windows machine to do word processing! Hope that this will not

always be the case. (fingers crossed) <smile>

bought

an iMac in early August and absolutely love it! There are

some things I am not able to do on the Mac yet, though,
like

embossing on my Braille Blazer, working with databases,

although someone said there is a database app, Bento, I

think, that is supposed to be accessible... will try it
later.

May, I don't think you will regret switching, just keep a

Windows machine around until you're able to do all you
need

                    on the Mac.

platform is essential when learning the mac. I bet
those

of us who forgot it learned the mac a lot easier
than

those who could not let go of windows for one
reason or

another. it is definitely easier to forget it,
but for
