That is curious, what was it updating ?
You mentioned iTunes was acting strange before you shut down, was something
updating automatically ?
Yes, I have usually had no voiceover when a major operating system is going
through an update when it may restart itself several times, eventually coming
back on when the update has completed.

was not speaking. Once that was entered the update proceeded and the computer
is now talking. But, I thought VoiceOver would speak during the updating
