VO went nuts both times so I couldn't read the screen.
One time I totally lost speech; wish I had command f5'd it back into existence, oh well.

ah, it locked up. This probably means you had a stuck process. they can
usually be dislodged by pressing command-option-escape and choosing the
offender from the list and tabbing to force quit, press space and say yes.
to the force quit question.

No, it didn't turn itself off.
I had to hold down the power button.

Oh ok, think I saw that one, thanks.

P.S. I've managed to crash the Mac twice and yes I mean hard shutdowns. I
know, Macs never crash but mine does. Maybe the permissions thing are the
reason?

Sara,

Unless you have renamed your Harddrive, it should be called, Macintosh
HD.

Repairing permissions should be done after you have installed new
software, or, an update.

Repairing permissions helps to creat a more direct path for your files
and programs, so, that your MAC runs more smoothly, this is the quick
explanation.

Repairing permissions,

Go to the utilities directory,
from the finder, command-shift-u
Then to disk utility,
Interact with the table and find your drive, then click on the
firstaid tab.

VO keys, or, tab over to the repair permissions button and Press it
with VO keys-space bar.

It may take several minutes and you can VO around and find the report,
or, wait until the repair permissions button is not dim.
